Description
Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) is one of the leading research centres in Germany in the fields of renewable energy, material science and quantum information. At HZB’s Berlin Joint Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Lab (BeJEL) we are searching for a highly motivated PhD candidate within the DFG funded project “Quantum many body interactions in a two dimensional solid state system”. The goal is to create and use single spins in diamond (nitrogen vacancy centres, shortly NV) to control nanoscale two dimensional (2D) arrays of nuclear spins, with the final goal being the realisation of a solid state quantum simulator.
Realisation of a solid state quantum simulator
Fabrication and characterisation of NV centres, which are localized only a few nanometres below the diamond surface
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR and EPR) on a single flake of a 2D material
Creation of multiple quantum coherences within the 2D system and monitoring their time evolution
Engineering of interaction Hamiltonians and observing quantum phase transitions
Requirements
Master degree in physics or related field
Master degree in physics or related field
High motivation to work in a team on a demanding research project
Advanced knowledge of quantum mechanics or the willingness to obtain it
Good experimental skills in optics and/or magnetic resonance (NMR or EPR)
